Fellows and Special Programs

Applications for fellows programs with coursework beginning fall 2022 will open on December 1, 2021.

You can control your individual learning experience by becoming a Smith fellow. Each one-year program is unique and will allow the intense study of a specific area of business, ranging from finance and supply chain to strategic design and global consulting. Most programs require one course in the fall semester and one in the spring semester.

When are fellows applications open?

Most fellows applications open in December and close in mid-February for admission to the program for the next academic year, starting that fall semester. This is the only time of year we accept students into fellows. Some programs may re-open later in the spring/summer for transfer student applicants based on program space availability. However, acceptance would be on a provisional basis pending admittance to Smith.

I am interested in more than one fellows program. To how many may I apply?

You may apply to as many fellows programs as you want (applications for each program are evaluated separately and have no bearing on one another), but you may only accept your admission to one program per year unless there is space available in another program and you are given special permission to do both (Business Honors, Accounting Teaching Scholars, and QUEST do not count toward this limit).

How many fellows programs may I do in one year?

You may participate in up to two fellows programs in one year if space is available in your second choice program. (Business Honors, Accounting Teaching Scholars, and QUEST do not count toward this limit).

I want to study abroad. How would this affect my participation in my fellows program?

Combining a fellows program with global experience is possible — but may require careful planning and a clear understanding of course requirements and program responsibilities. While spending a semester abroad may not be acceptable for some programs, short term study abroad courses during winter, spring or summer breaks are always encouraged. See individual program websites for more details.

If I am in the process of applying to the Smith School, may I apply for fellows at the same time?

You may apply to the fellows programs before you are admitted to Smith, but your admission to fellows would be contingent upon your admission to the Smith School at College Park. Due to scheduling/major restrictions, we are typically unable to offer fellows admissions to Smith students at Shady Grove. Individual exceptions must be approved.

What should I include in my cover letter for fellows, and should I follow the standard cover letter format?

You should follow the standard cover letter format (address it to the faculty champion of the program to which you are applying). Introduce yourself and explain what interests you about this fellows program as well as how you see it meeting your academic and career goals. What can you contribute to the program?

I need a resume to apply to fellows; however, I am only a freshman, and I don’t have much on my resume yet. What should I include on my resume?

If you haven’t yet had work experience, you are welcome to list your activities, volunteer and other work in high school, and extra-curricular and other programs you are involved in at Maryland, so the selection committee can see the range of your interests and accomplishments. You should get in the habit of updating your professional resume. It should be a constant work in progress.

How to include fellows on your resume.

Participating in Smith fellows programs is an honor as it provides a special opportunity to participate in dedicated courses, site visits, and case competitions as well as network with special guests from the world of business and alumni. The following policies are established in order to extend these special opportunities to all Smith students and to enhance the learning communities created within each program.

General Restriction for All Fellows Programs

There is no deferred admission to Smith fellows programs. Students must begin in the first semester of the program sequence or their acceptance to the program will be canceled. Students accepted to programs with pre-requisite course requirements must complete the requirement(s) before the program starts, or acceptance will be canceled.

Students may participate in more than one fellows program per year on a space-available basis (business honors and QUEST do not count toward this limit.) Students are expected to take the required fellows courses AND complete expected co-curricular program requirements. Students who fail to complete their fellows program may not be admitted to another fellows program in a subsequent academic year.

Enrolling in Fellows Classes

Most fellows programs have certain courses or sections dedicated to students in the particular fellows program. Accommodations and exceptions in registration cannot be made in fellows programs for dedicated courses. Because each new fellows cohort will enroll in the classes set aside for that program year, students from earlier cohorts cannot put off their course enrollments in hopes of joining a subsequent class. Courses and students will be coded to facilitate registration. Students not accepted to fellows may not enroll in these dedicated sections.

Attending Fellows Events and Activities

The majority of fellows events and activities are restricted to students enrolled in the specific fellows program. Should space allow, these events may be open to the general student body.

Penalty for No Show

Fellows are expected to act in a professional and courteous manner. Students who RSVP to attend an event but do not attend (i.e., an etiquette dinner, field trip/site visit), may incur a charge to their student account.
