For Doug Peters ’85, there’s a tie to Maryland Smith that runs deep. Now, the former Maryland state senator is helping others form a Maryland Smith bond of their own, establishing a Maryland Promise scholarship to help support need-based scholarships for UMD undergraduate students, with a preference for those who plan to study at Smith. Peters worked to establish the endowed fund over the summer, as he retired from Maryland’s state senate and was appointed to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.
How can a leading financial institution effectively deliver banking products and services to disadvantaged communities while still earning a socially responsible profit for shareholders? That was the question posed to Maryland Smith’s MBA students in the M&T Bank Case competition. The event, which took place at the close of Smith’s two-week MBA orientation, brought students together to work in teams to identify how the company can effectively deliver banking products and services to disadvantaged communities while still earning a socially responsible profit for shareholders.
The University of Maryland will receive a $1.5 million gift from the Fishlinger Family Foundation to support the Robert H. Smith School of Business’ Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’ Joel and Kim Feller Advising and Career Center. The first $1 million of the donation is designated to help fund the Dingman Center’s programs, operations and other initiatives that help students launch their own startups. The other $500,000 will go to the Feller Center, to endow a Fishlinger director of career planning.

And to our junior and senior classes, and to our other returning students, welcome back. It’s so good to see you.
In a sunny ceremony in the Van Munching Hall courtyard on Monday, Aug. 2, former Maryland Senator Doug Peters ’85 was sworn in as the newest member of the University of Maryland Board of Regents.
